USED to be a great restaurant until new ownership!!

Since new ownership took over in October 2009 this place has spiraled downward. Durham Pizza had loyal patrons due to the friendly owners and staff, reasonable prices for down-home cooking. New owners are cold, have replaced/fired most of the staff, jacked the prices, and the quality is over-all substandard. The only plus to this place now is the fact that it's located acros from Bennet Point Grill that has a much better atmosphere, great food at great prices, friendly staff, and great ownership.

Exactly what we've been looking for!

My girlfriend and I have been searching for good, solid, reasonably priced Italian-American food since we moved from NYC to Durham in August '07. We tried every style of Italian restaurant Durham had to offer us, from chains like Maggiano's and Macaroni Grill to over-priced and over-hyped Restaurant Vespa on Franklin in CH to good but inconsistent Bocci on Fayetteville Rd. We were so unsatisfied with what we found that we gave up and resigned ourselves to cooking any time we wanted to fix our baked ziti or maicotti craving. But tonight we were just too tired, too cold and too hungry to cook, so we took a chance and stopped by DPR after reading about them on Carpe Durham, and boy our we happy we did. The food was *good* - classic Italian-American dishes just like the ones we grew up on in NY and FL. The salads we standard fare, and the bread was good old fashioned white Italian style - steaming hot and perfect for mopping up salad dressing or leftover sauce and cheese. My baked manicotti was filled with ricotta and topped with bubbling mozzarella and a solid marinara sauce. My gf's baked ziti was juicy and cheesy and still bubbling from the oven when they brought it out. The prices and portions were very reasonable, and our two entrees with salad and bread and two Cokes came out to just over $25. We were there late, and came in just as their last party was leaving, but our waitress was still friendly and happy to have us there. The decor's nothing to write home about, though you can tell it's a well-used restaurant from the wear on the booths and floors. The bar off in a side room looks interesting and might be worth checking out. We'll definitely be going back, and look forward to trying out many of the other classic Italian-American dishes on the menu.

Pros: food, friendly service

Cons: a little out of the way on a dark strip of Hillsborough road
