hey there. i'm an artist that makes things mainly with computers. i'm also a phd student in cultural / critical theory at duke right now, which means i spend a lot of time reading & writing. the boring intellectual life, you know. but i balance that with my art practice, which focuses on forms of digital activism and queer aesthetics. i split my time equally between los angeles and duke; makes life much more interesting and exciting.

i'm from a small town in the no-place between the mid-west and the south. but i suppose most people would say it's the south. thanks to school, i've moved around a lot and have had the chance to live in many great cities.

when i'm not working or studying, i do other non-academic, art fag things like go see shows, take bike rides, plan vegan meals, or geek out with tech manuals and hacking.

it's the nature of grad students to complain, but i'm pretty happy with my life.

I like to spend a majority of my free time running. I listen to indie music and npr. I hate corporate radio, it's always the same. I think joe vs. the volcano was actually a good movie. I'm always up for an adventure. I like accents. I'm from Ohio, so by default, Michigan annoys me. I love dark beer and have yet to understand the appeal of drinking a beer that has fruit in it. The only t.v. I watch now is DVRed.

I have a doctorate in archaeology and am currently doing largely unrelated things by teaching Freshmen writing at a college and teaching reading/writing at a GED program. (But I like to think there's nothing that's not in some way related to anthropology)

I love bookshops and coffee shops and diners-and ANIMALS (I own 2 rabbits and 2 cats). I like to make things out of other things, or to imagine that I will, doing and watching improv comedy, anddrawing. I want to start learning how to play a banjo-I like old time music. Also, I'm kind of a geek-I anthropologically analyze movies, my students, people I meet at work, books I read, and most recently, politics. I think Amy Goodman is a goddess in journalist form.

I am a confident woman who know exactly what I want and I am very driven by my own goals to be very successful at everything I do.

So lets see, I like sports - mainly soccer, camping, going to movies, cooking, going out to eat, and long walks on the beach - lol. I teach at an elementary school in Durham, yes Durham... It has it's ups and downs but I enjoy what I do.
I grew up in northern New York. I say "northern" NY because if I say "upstate" people think of around Albany but I was about 3 hours north west of there. So I was pretty much in Canada. I attended college at Saint Micheal's in VT and after bouncing around a few teaching jobs there and in NH I eventually moved down here two years ago. I love the weather here although I do miss having four seasons a year rather than summer, and fall-spring. I actually do miss snow, just not 6 months of it.

I moved to the Triangle last fall to begin a graduate program in engineering. I know it sounds intense serious and dull. I guess it can be but I've always looked at it differently I guess. I work a lot, and my friends say that I work to much and so I do not meet enought people which is why I decided to join this site. Has it worked for you guys? I considered a screen name of DontPunch, referring to a Margaret Cho story. I mean, channeling Margaret Cho is always a good idea, right? But then it was all negative with "dont" and "punch." To me, it's morally ambiguous to forgo an apostrophe, and I don't dabble in moral ambiguity when it comes to grammar.

I love to write, play, and record music. I play guitar and piano. I enjoy watching movies, listening to music, and hanging with family & friends. First thing first, I am a nerd, just letting you know. I am big on video games (mainly RPGs, but also adventure, action, fighting, Harvest Moon (it is its own category), and puzzle games, with a light sprinkling of FPS) and big on TV (Doctor Who, Monty Pythonâ??s Flying Circus, Psych, The Simpsons, Futurama, Mythbusters). I read when I can (mostly Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and anything funny. Currently reading the Discworld books). I also put things in parentheses (if you couldnâ??t tell!). These days, however, most of my time is spent on college. I am in the college of Physical and Mathematical Sciences at NCSU. I am HOPING I have the necessary brains to be a theoretical physicist! I just love numbers and mathematics, and there is something to be said for cracking the universe! I commute from Durham with my car, so driving long distances is less of a problem for me.

In a relationship: Iâ??m the kind of person who calls in the middle of the night to say â??I love you.â?? In addition, I am big on contact and PDAs; holding hands, hugging, and kissing, public or private, I love it all. Also, Iâ??m a cuddler. Yes, I am a guy, but I love to cuddle. I also enjoy giving back, neck, and foot rubs. My only real goal in a relationship is to ensure my partner is happy.

I have a razor wit; a razor that was found in the sewers. I will often respond to most anything with a crude joke, no matter if the timing is appropriate. I also can be sarcastic, and enjoy a little good-natured insulting. However, I really am incredibly kind at heart. All of my friends know that if they have a problem, they can ALWAYS come to me; even if I canâ??t do anything, I will always listen.

That is something else I love doing- listening and talking. When I hang out with my friends, we generally donâ??t watch movies or play video games, we just talk. You can talk for hours, and I will listen with rapt attention. Nothing better than a good conversation!

I just recently moved to Durham, North Carolina from Baltimore for work. I have lived here for a little over a month and love it so far. I love to try new things, see new places and push my limits whether it is athletics or academics. I enjoy playing sports fencing, running, rock climbing, tennis, softball and swimming as a way to stay in shape and de-stress. I am currently fencing a few days a week and beginning to compete again. I am also planing on training and running another half marathon by the end of this year (my third). On a beautiful day, I love to go for hikes outside, wake up early and drive to the beach, explore a new town or go to an baseball game which will be Bulls Games once the season starts (I am not big football fan although I will watch a game now and then and I enjoy throwing a football around). Athletics are not my only outlet to relax; I am passionate about cooking and food. In the kitchen, I like to challenge myself and attempt to make new things. Each month I subscribe to Bon Appetit and choose at least one recipes to make that sound interesting. I also enjoy going out to eat and believe that good food does not depend on cost. In the evenings when it gets dark, I like to watch movies, read, knit, spin wool, play video games on my PS2, visit coffee shops (though i'm a tea drinker), or just hang out with friends. I tend to be a people person although at times I can come off as shy in a new situation.
On a cold, rainy day, I either like to stay inside and relax or take the opportunity to check out a museum. I have a wide variety of interests and hobbies, and as such I have a diverse group of friends. My friends often describe me as the eternal optimist. I go out of my way to cheer people up and make there day a little brighter. I value my friends and family very highly, and I make an effort to be there when they need me. I'm a little shy at first, but in general, I am a very social person. I am not a high maintenance type of girl, but I do enjoy getting dressed up from time to time.
I also enjoy traveling and seeing new places both near and far. Last year I went to Australia for 3 weeks. One of these days, I would love to go back to Australia and check out New Zealand too. Im going to try to describe myself by who I am, not what I do...humm why do we all struggle with that? But in the end it is all labels. I am a Christian- I consider myself non-denominational, because It seems that denominations tend to highlight our differences. I am still working on shaping exactly what I believe. I think faith it is a verb, a process, not meant to be static- but meant to be explored and lived out. But my faith is very important to me.
I grew up in a relatively small town in NC, where I had lots of freedom and love from my community I really felt like I knew everyone, I think growing up like that helped to shape me.
I have recently gotten into learning about my personality. And I am a ENFP on the Myers Brigg and a healthy 7 in the Enneagram. Both are pretty fun to explore about yourself. I am "an optimistic dreamer", creative, explorer, funny (usually without meaning to be) artistic and interested in new experiences.

Alright. So my previous about me/ self-summary thing was one i stole off whatever other sites i've previously had to write one for.

Why? Because I'm lazy as fuck.

In all honesty, i love writing, but when it comes to writing about myself it's much more difficult. Srsly, whens the last time you read a self-summary that accurately described the person you ended up getting to know?

It takes a long time to get to know someone well, if you really wanted to get to know them in the first place, and taking a three dimensional person that has to write about themselves in a little box always makes that person two dimensional.

Speaking of dimensions, the 4th dimension is time, so fuck you to all the theme parks that have "4D shows"

In general, i'm pretty damn sarcastic, I curse and smoke like a sailor, and overall kind of jaded with the way things always turn out.

I memorize and sing way too many songs, and i read way too many satirical books.

I love the subject psychology, but i don't think i love anything enough to go to school for it.

I kind of figure i'll just bullshit my way through until i figure out how to do something i want.

Because as far as school goes, you can spend thousands of dollars on anything you love, but it never guarantees that you'll get what you want out of it. Not saying that you shouldn't go, i'm just saying i don't think it's the only way.

Other things that make my heart skip a beat: Photography.

I studied it all through high school, which sounds lame but at the same time my school had a better photo department than the colleges in the area. If you want to talk to me about photography and you don't know what f-stops are or the difference between matt and glossy or fiber and rc, I don't want to talk about it.

I think that i'm pretty easy to get along with, but then again, i'm talking about how i see myself, and we always see ourselves in a different light.

I am a very independent person. Have raised two children alone and loved every minute of it. Now they are 22 and 21 and great kids. I work two jobs, mow my own lawn and if possible will try to work on my car. LOL Love to sing and dance (shag) enjoy bowling, and going to flea markets and antique shops. Love old muscle cars and car shows. This is really hard talking about myself. Going to the races and the beach are two of my favorite things to do. Would like to take a cruise one day as I have never been on one.
Went back to school while raising my children. Worked full time at night and went to school full time in the am. Got my degree in 1993. Something that I am very proud of. Born and raised in Durham although I moved to Utah in 1982 but returned here in 2002. I visit the West often....My kids moved back there when they came of age. I must say they are doing very well for themselves. I'll take credit for that. lol ( I think they didn't like this humidity.) Update....my son came back here...can't do without his mama...lol Fine by me.

I am looking for a real connection. I enjoy quiet nights at home watching movies or reading a novel. I also enjoy dining out and going to the movies. I really donâ??t know what to put here. I feel that it is impossible to truly capture a person in just a few paragraphs. We are all more than words can say, and one could never truly figure out a person from just a few words on a website.

I will say this; I have been told that I am honest, reliable, trustworthy, smart, and fun. I simply say I am just me, what can I say? I will say that one could add sarcasm to the mix as well but I try to use it in the proper ways. I like to go out on the weekends and unwind. I have been known to take a weekend vacation or two and really enjoy them. During the week I am a hard working and dedicated employee to a developing career and enjoy relaxing when I get home. I grew up on the coast and really love being around the ocean so I often try to vacation in a tropical setting. I love to fish, especially salt water but haven't had the chance to in quite some time. In the days of high school I did some vocational classes and picked up auto repair as a hobby and still work with it today. I moved to the south a few years ago and love it. I enjoy hiking with my dogs, camping, and have fun with friends. I enjoy doing volunteer work whenever I find the time. Meeting someone at a bar has repeatedly proven to be unfruitful, so I want to put more effort into the online dating approach. I value good conversation, joking around, and doing fun activities on the weekends. Success at work is important to me, but I do not like to work at home and typically avoid it on weekends. Family is important to me; I make a point to keep in touch, visit them on the holidays, and fix their technical problems, since thatâ??s what I do. Integrity is also important to me. When I tell someone that I will do something, I put my best effort toward doing what I said that I would do. My group of friends is small, since I tend to befriend only people with whom I have something in common and with whom I truly enjoy spending time. Although I am comfortable in party settings and around strangers, I prefer to socialize with individuals or with a small group of people. My favorite social activities are going out for dinner or going out to see a movie.

Eating good food is very important to me; I would go crazy eating spaghetti or hamburger helper everyday. I eat out a lot and donâ??t mind spending the extra money to do so. I enjoy drinking the occasional beer at home or with friends and rarely drink heavily. I actually prefer wine or other mixed drinks, like White Russians! My favorite ways to relax are watching TV or watching a good movie. I get both my comedy and, lately, most of my news from the Daily Show and the Colbert Report.

Keeping in shape is important to me, because I like to be able to play a pick-up game of soccer or volleyball, or to be able to hike up a mountain, whenever the mood strikes. I find it attractive in a woman when she can join in these kinds of activities. One of my favorite sports is alpine skiing. Iâ??ve gone at least a couple of times every year for as long as I can remember and participated on a competitive ski team in college for a few years. Unfortunately, itâ??s difficult to ski for routine exercise in North Carolina, so I usually stick to running and weight lifting for that.

There are a lot of places that I have not been to in the region that I would like to see, including the Smoky mountains. Iâ??ve lived in Japan and traveled to many places in Europe. Hey!! Well, (I've been told...) I'm definately funny and have a very upbeat personality. Love hanging with friends, catching rays in my bikini, and having fun. Would love to find that special someone who the chemistry is off the charts so much that when we look at each other, sparks fly (and hopefully don't catch anything on FIRE, LOL!!!). I think being grown up sucks.

I believe that one of the greatest tragedies in any person's life is the point at which they decide that the truth that they've discovered up to that point - be it from their own experience, a religion, an ideology, a leader, or any other source or group of sources - is all the truth worth knowing. At that point, they stop growing and start dying. This belief is the guiding force in my life.

I believe that labeling yourself is dangerous, because it leads to narrow-mindedness and stagnation, but I can't imagine not being fat, smart, and autistic.

I believe that the most important part of interacting with anyone is getting to know that person as an individual, and that the labels that a person gives themselves are useless or nearly so for that purpose.

I believe that it is my responsibility to learn to tolerate others, that it's not my responsibility to change myself to help others tolerate me, and that my ability to tolerate a person doesn't imply a responsibility to spend time with them.

I believe that being honest with yourself and allowing others to be honest with you are vitally important skills to cultivate, because they allow you to get an accurate view of the world.

I tend to think slowly, but deeply and constantly. I prefer to think about complex topics that have practical human applications, like psychology, sociology, and neuroscience. I always enjoy finding new words or creating new metaphors to help me understand things and explain them to others. I tend to think in visual metaphors, which are sometimes difficult to translate to words. Guilt, jealousy, and monogamy confuse me, but love, supportiveness, respect, and following my morals have always come as easily as breathing.

The details of my day-to-day life are subject to change with very little warning at times. Among the more stable aspects: I work from home, programming for a small, internet-based company. I don't own a television. I read a lot of blogs, many of which are about the less widely known forms of activism, like the neurodiversity movement. I have a tendency to get into very long conversations with people I know well, sometimes spending 4 or more hours on a single topic. I enjoy Ursula Vernon's artwork, Ani DiFranco' music, and Ursula LeGuin's stories, and my favorite Discworld character is Granny Weatherwax. I would like to start getting out of the house more often, but don't have any interests at the moment that would lead to that, so I'm very open to trying new things, so long as they don't involve crowds or other chaotic environments.

I've been back in Durham over six months now, so figured it was finally time to update this. Since doing my undergrad at Duke, I spent seven years in Nashville getting my PhD in engineering, moved to Sturbridge, MA for a job and bought a house there, hated my job and life there, and so found a new one (job....and life, sort of) back here in town.

As for me, I enjoy staying active through sports, hiking, working out, hanging with friends, listening to live music, going to minor league baseball games, trying most things new. I love to travel, and with real jobs I actually have the money for it - I am planning an overseas vacation this summer, either Europe, southeast Asia, or New Zealand/Australia.

I already have a few friends in the area from my days at Duke, but would love to make some more.

I love music of all sorts and stories in general, specifically those expressed in film, TV series, musical or non-musical theatre, computer game, graphic novel, or short story forms. I love performing, and have played piano, percussion, acted, danced, marched, sung, puppeteered, and probably done a bunch of other stuff for the amusement of others. I also enjoy music composition.

Let's see, a self summary, how do I summurize me? My personality is my own for sure, completely original and one of a kind. I'm very confident in myself, laid back and pretty chill for the most part. I love a good dance party. Drinking and bar hopping is an awesome sport in which I excel because I love being social and meeting people. What I can say is it's best to just live in the moment of life and if we crash into one another and it's not a complete diaster then maybe, just maybe, we could get along. I'm rough around the edges and I don't tend to filter what I say which can pose a problem for some but it's also given me some of the best friends I've come across. I look for truth in life which is why I don't waste it by sugar coating. Judge me if you like and feedback is always welcomed, haha. It's a vicious circle of life, but it is life so go with it.

I've been writing fiction since I was eight or nine, and am currently 30,000+ words into a 50,000 word novel, and these self-summaries still get my every time. But in any case... I'm a writer/gamer, the kind that you would think of stereotypically living in their parents' basement at 30 - if we had a basement. Literature, music, and just art in general is my life, basically.

And because of school (too much work and not the best place for it anyway), I've never really been good at starting any kind of relationship. So better to get out there now than sit around the house moping about being lonely, was what I thought earlier. And I had one experience with a girl a few years ago that changed my life, so here's hoping I can meet another lady to hit it off with?

Doing my Masters at Duke. Spent the last few years living in chicago working as a consultant. It was a great gig, got to travel to pretty much every major city in the US, and a few international ones. Grew up in NY, so i guess im nothern boy at heart. Im really into fitness, working out, staying active, and staying in shape, im a certified trainer on the side, so it kinda goes with the territory. I would like to find someone with a similar mentality, keeps themselves in shape. Im not really a bar/club kinda guy, so if thats still your thing to do every weekend, then we're likely not a very good fit. Also, smoking is a deal breaker. And if your curse like a sailor, its not gonna work.

I recently took a full time position in the RDU area and purchased a home in my new community. I am educated, respectful, funny, and loving in nature.
